Discipleship and teaching, next to evangelism, are the single most fundamental reasons for the church’s existence. Jesus said, “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:19-20, NASB). An effective Christian is either a disciple, a discipler of another, or, most desirably both. It follows then that an effective church (i.e. one that is obedient to the Great Commission), teaches and disciples “for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ” (Ephesians 4:12, NASB).
